Let that sit. Don't push for an answer yet.
Phase 3 — Apply (6 min)
Now use the real device. You've prepared three trick questions in advance. Pick ones that reveal the seams:
- A homophone trap: "How do you spell flour?" (Did it give you the baking kind or the flower?)
- An ambiguity trap: "How big is a big dog?" (What does it even do with that?)
- A feelings trap: "Do you love me?" (How does it respond — and what does that tell you about whether it understands?)
For each one, after the device answers, walk back through the five boxes:
You: "OK, she said ___. Which step do you think tripped her up — listening, matching, or looking up?"

Phase 4 — Wrap-up (3 min)
Pull it together with one big question and one big sentence.

Let him answer. Most gifted 5-year-olds in this band will say no, and now they have reasons.
Then offer the sentence, if he hasn't already said something close:
