Total time: 15 minutes (but see note above — may be 3–5 minutes if he's already there)

Phase 1: Introduce — "Show me where the story starts" (3 min)

Open the picture book to a two-page spread. Don't read yet. Hand him the book and let him hold it.

Listen carefully. You're not checking whether he can do this — he almost certainly can. You're checking whether he can articulate it as a rule rather than just doing it automatically.

Phase 2: Explore — "What if the book was wrong?" (4 min)

This is where you gently introduce the idea that print conventions are choices, not laws of physics.

  • "What if I read this book starting from the bottom-right corner and going backward? What would happen?"

Let him try it. Let him hear the nonsense. Then:

  • "Why doesn't that work?"

  • "Who decided it should go left-to-right? Do you think it could have been different?"

If he's intrigued, show him the phone image of Arabic or Hebrew text (right-to-left) or Japanese (top-to-bottom, right-to-left columns).

  • "Look — this is a real book in another language. Which way does it go?"
