Start here. Your son may already feel this idea intuitively — he's argued with a sibling or friend about "what really happened." Phase 1: Concrete — Stage the Event (5 minutes)
Set up a simple scene on a table. A stuffed animal sits near the edge. A block tower stands nearby. You and your son stand on opposite sides of the table. Without warning, you nudge the stuffed animal so it "bumps" the block tower and the tower falls.
Both of you watched the same event. Now ask:
- "What just happened?"
Let him describe it. Then you describe it — but from your side. Emphasise something he couldn't see well: maybe the angle the animal fell, or that the tower wobbled before it fell, or that you saw the animal's paw touch the second block specifically.
Then ask:
- "Did we see the same thing?"
- "Was I telling the truth? Were you telling the truth?"
- "So how can we both be telling the truth if we said different things?"
Sample dialogue:
"Wait — you said the tower fell because the bear bumped it. I said the tower was already wobbly and the bear just touched it. Are we both lying?"
Pause. Let him sit with the contradiction. This is the cognitive friction where learning lives.
Phase 2: Pictorial — Draw What You Saw (5 minutes)
Give him paper and crayons. Ask him to draw what happened from where he was standing. You draw it from your side.
Put the two drawings side by side.
- "What's the same in our pictures?"
- "What's different?"
- "Why do you think they're different?"
He may say "because we were in different spots." That's the concept landing. Name it for him:
- "That's called a perspective. You saw it from your perspective and I saw it from mine. Both are real."
Phase 3: Abstract — Connect to History (5–7 minutes)
Now bridge to the historical thinking move:
- "History works the same way. When something happens — a battle, a discovery, an argument — different people write down what they saw. And they all think they're telling the truth. But they were standing in different places, or they cared about different things, or they noticed different details."
Give a concrete child-relatable example:
- "Imagine your sister and you both told me about a fight you had. You'd both tell the truth — but you'd tell it from your side. Historians read both versions and ask: why might these be different?"
Introduce the vocabulary naturally:
- "Each version is called an account. When we compare accounts, we're doing something historians call corroboration — checking stories against each other to understand what really happened."
Phase 4: Wrap-up (2–3 minutes)
Ask him to summarise in his own words:
- "So if you heard two different stories about the same thing, what would you think?"

1. The Sibling Swap (5 minutes) Have him describe a recent disagreement or event from the other person's perspective. Not as a trick — as a genuine exercise. "Tell me what happened from your sister's side. What did she see? What did she care about?" This is the seed of both historical thinking and empathy.
2. The Three Witnesses (5 minutes) Add a third person to the toy-tipping event — a stuffed animal positioned somewhere neither of you was standing. Ask: "What would the bear have seen? Would the bear's account match yours or mine?" This introduces the idea that there can be more than two valid perspectives — and some are more useful than others.
3. Real History Mini-Case (5–10 minutes) Tell a very simple version of a historical event from two perspectives. Example: the moon landing — an American might say "we achieved the greatest thing," a Soviet scientist might say "we lost the space race." Both are true accounts. Ask: "Why would these two people describe the same event so differently?" Don't aim for sophisticated analysis — aim for the question forming.
4. The Motivation Layer (5 minutes) Introduce a deeper question: "What if the person writing the account wanted you to believe something? Does that change whether they're telling the truth?" This introduces bias gently — the idea that perspective isn't just about where you stood but what you wanted people to think.
