Why this matters

Activity: "The Half-Empty Village"

A four-phase conceptual lesson. Total time 15–20 minutes — but follow his lead. If he wants to linger in Explore, that's where gifted kids often make the richest connections.

Phase 1: Introduce (3–4 minutes)

Set out both bowls. Put all 40 beans in one. Tell him this bowl is a village.

You: "This bowl is a village in England, about 700 years ago. Each bean is a person. There's a baker, a farmer, a mum, some kids, a priest — about 40 people. Can you guess — what do you think happened in 1348 that made this village go from 40 people to..." (move ~20 beans slowly to the other bowl) "...about 20?"

Let him guess. Some kids will say war, some will say "they moved," some will already know. Honor every guess — they're all reasonable.

You: "It was a sickness. We call it the Black Death. It came from a tiny germ — a bacterium — that lived in the blood of rats. And the rats had fleas, and the fleas bit people. And the sickness spread from person to person once it got into a town."

Phase 2: Explore (5–6 minutes)

Now dig into the mechanism and the scale.

Pause. Let him sit with that. He may have questions — answer briefly and move on.

Phase 3: Apply (5–6 minutes)

If he says something like "they'd have to do it themselves" or "find new people" — you're in business. Build on whatever he offers.

You: "Yes. And the lord had a problem. There aren't enough workers. So if you're the only blacksmith left in three villages, and the lord needs you... what could you say?"

He may say "I'd ask for more money." If he does, celebrate that — it's the exact economic reasoning this lesson is reaching toward.

You: "Exactly. And that's what happened. Phase 4: Wrap-up (2–3 minutes)

"Why did the peasants get more power? Couldn't the lords just force them?" He's already in the second-order reasoning. Push deeper. "Some tried. There were laws saying peasants couldn't ask for more money. But think about it — if you're a lord and you jail the only blacksmith for ten miles, who shoes your horse? The threat only works if you can afford to carry it out."
"Did the kings die too?" Good question, partial misconception that plague hit only the poor. "Yes — some kings and lords died too. The plague didn't care if you were rich or poor. But rich people had bigger houses, fewer rats, and could leave the city. So more poor people died. That's part of why the peasants who survived became so valuable."
He fixates on symptoms (buboes, blackened skin) Morbid curiosity is extremely common in gifted kids — and age-appropriate in small doses.
