Your son is younger than the stated band, but his verbal reasoning and pattern-spotting are well above level. The cognitive fit is solid. Why this matters
Most people think a business idea is a lightning bolt — a brilliant flash in the shower. It isn't. Almost every real business began the same way: someone noticed something annoying, broken, slow, or missing, and wondered if they could fix it.
This is the most important idea in entrepreneurship, and your son is at a perfect age to internalize it because he already does this — every "why do we have to…" or "this is dumb" or "I wish there was a…" is a business seed. Most kids get talked out of noticing before the pattern forms. You're protecting the noticing.
You're not teaching him to "be an entrepreneur." You're teaching him to treat problems as opportunities — a habit that transfers everywhere: writing, science, friendships, civics, ethics.
The second piece — invention (something brand-new) vs innovation (making an existing thing better) — matters because most real businesses are innovations. Knowing this frees him from the impossible standard of "I have to think of something no one's ever thought of." That standard paralyzes even adults.

Materials

- A marker or pen he likes — low friction matters; if the pen feels wrong, he'll bail.

- Optional: paper folded into three columns labeled "Problem / Who has it / What could help." Some kids love a form. Others find it constraining. Offer; don't require.

Best time of day
Mid-morning after a snack tends to work — blood sugar up, brain fresh, not yet in the post-lunch slump. Avoid right before a transition (leaving the house, screen time he's anticipating) — this lesson needs unhurried thinking, and a 5-year-old who knows a transition is coming will rush.

Phase 2: Explore (5-7 min)
Turn it on him. You're not asking for solutions yet — only for problems. This separation matters.
You: "Think about your whole day — wake up to bedtime. Was there anything annoying? Anything hard? Anything where you thought 'ugh, this again'? Don't try to fix it yet. Just catch the problem."
Hand him a sticky note per problem. Let him write or draw. Accept anything: "My socks feel weird," "My sister takes my Lego," "I can never find the marker cap," "Shoes take too long to tie."
Gifted kids at this age often try to impress you with "big" problems (climate change, homelessness). That's beautiful. Write it down. Don't redirect. But also gently wonder: "Those are real and big. Can you also find a small one — one that bugs just you, this week?" Small-and-personal is where his brain can actually operate.
Aim for 3-5 problems. Don't push past when he's done.
Phase 3: Apply (5-7 min)
Pick ONE problem together — ideally the one he seems most energized by. Walk through three questions, slowly:
- "Who else has this problem?" — name two or three kinds of people (customers!)
- "What could you make or do that might help?" — accept any answer; do not judge feasibility
- "Is your idea something brand-new — like nothing like it exists? Or is it making something that already exists a little better?"
The third question is where invention vs innovation lives. Pick up the real product you gathered: "See this travel mug? Nobody invented 'a cup.' Cups existed forever. But someone said — what if the cup didn't spill in the car? That's an innovation — making an existing thing better. Most real businesses are innovations, not inventions."
Phase 4: Wrap-up (2-3 min)
Name what just happened. Children at this age often don't realize they've done something significant until you mirror it back.
You: "Do you know what you just did? You did what real business owners do. You noticed a problem, you thought about who else has it, and you imagined something that could help. That's a business idea. That's the whole beginning."
If he's proud, let him be. Resist "and next time we'll…" unless he asks.
Optionally, let him stick his favorite problem-and-idea note somewhere visible (fridge, wall) so the habit of noticing continues past today.

Your son may blow through the base lesson in 8 minutes. Here's where his brain actually wants to go.
Stretch 1: The Problem Hunt (~5 min)
Walk through one room together. Count problems. "Look around the kitchen — what's annoying? What's broken? What takes too long?" Aim for five. The point isn't the list; it's the noticing reflex — turning it on like a flashlight he can switch on anywhere.
Stretch 2: Invention or Innovation? (~5 min)
Name five familiar products (Lego, iPad, sneakers, cereal, toothbrush). For each: "Was this an invention — something brand-new — or an innovation — an improvement on something older?" Most will be innovations. This builds the habit of seeing lineage in products, which is how real entrepreneurs think. No product is born from nothing.
Stretch 3: The "Who Else?" Map (~5-7 min)
Take his favorite problem. Ask: "Who else in the world has this? Can you name five different kinds of people?" This gently introduces market — different customer segments — without jargon. If he sails through, ask which group would most want a fix. That's targeting. That's real strategy.
Stretch 4: Two Solutions, Same Problem (~5 min)
For one problem, ask him for two completely different solutions. (For "I lose my markers": A = a marker belt; B = markers that beep when you clap.) This combats the gifted kid's tendency to lock onto the first clever answer and defend it. Multiple solutions = creative fluency, a real entrepreneurial muscle.
Stretch 5: The Failure Pre-Load (~3 min)
"So your idea — would it actually work? What's one reason it might NOT?" This is a soft preview of "Learning from Failure," the next dependent topic. Plant the seed that good business thinkers imagine failure before it arrives.

- Making a Simple Plan — taking one of his ideas and sketching what you'd actually do (materials, steps, who helps). The natural next step. Try this within a few days while the idea is fresh.
- Learning from Failure — trying an idea, watching it not work, and discovering that's normal and useful. Needs him to have tried first.
- Real Entrepreneurs — hearing stories of how actual founders got their ideas. Best after he's generated one himself, so he has a frame to receive their stories.

If this lesson didn't land
Some days the magic doesn't happen. Try, in rough order:
- Switch the manipulative. Some kids need to build the problem, not talk about it. "Build your problem out of Lego. Now build the thing that fixes it." Concrete rescue.
- Move to a different time of day. If after-snack didn't work, try right after outdoor play — some kids ideate best with body tired and brain loose.
- Shorten drastically. Just do Phase 1 (the reframe) and one problem. Stop. Come back tomorrow. Conceptual lessons compress and expand easily.
- Skip and return. If he can't generate personal problems, he may need more life mileage — more chores, more "I'm bored" moments, more friction to push against. Try again in 3-4 weeks.
