Race one final time. Ask him to predict: "Which one do you think will be quicker this time? Which will finish later?" Then confirm.

End with a one-sentence summary he can echo: "Quicker things finish earlier. Slower things finish later."

Race the car and the marble, but release the slower car two seconds before the marble. The marble will still finish first (it's quicker), but the car started earlier.

Ask: "Who started earlier? Who finished earlier? Who was quicker?"

If he holds all three distinctions — started earlier ≠ finished earlier, but quicker still describes the marble — he genuinely understands. Most children (and many adults) trip here. This is the lesson's true centre.

Stretch 2 — Three-object ranking

Add a third object. Now the language must shift: quicker / quickest, slower / slowest, earlier / earliest. Let him discover that comparatives need two things and superlatives need three. This is grammar masquerading as maths — both are real.

Before a race, ask: "How many seconds do you think the car will take? What about the marble?" Write down both predictions. Then time them. Compare: "Which one was more quicker than you thought?" Let him puzzle. There's no single right answer without more information — and noticing what's missing is a higher-order skill worth sitting in.

Stretch 5 — Connect to multiplication

If he knows some multiplication (your note says he does), try: "The car takes 4 seconds. The marble takes 2 seconds. How many times quicker is the marble? What if the marble took 1 second — then how many times quicker?" This is ratio language, and it lives here naturally.
