Read this first. Your son may already read most or all of these number words, and he may already write several. If so, this isn't a wasted lesson — it becomes a spelling and etymology lesson, which is where the real depth hides for a child like yours. Why this matters
Number words seem simple, but they're not. English number words from 11–19 carry a fossil record of older number systems: eleven means "one left (after ten)," twelve means "two left," and thirteen means "three and ten." The suffix -teen is a worn-down version of ten. The words two and twelve share a root; so do three and thirteen. This is the kind of pattern a child with your son's verbal reasoning will notice — and if you surface it, you give him something most children never get: number words as objects of curiosity, not just labels to memorize.
For a child already comfortable with numerals and quantities to 100+, the new learning here is orthographic — the spelling. English number-word spelling is genuinely irregular (two, not too; eight, not ate; forty, not fourty — though that last one is for later). Materials
- Index cards or paper squares (20 small pieces) — for numeral cards and word cards, used for matching and games. Card stock holds up better if you want to reuse.
- A dark marker — large, clear lettering matters here. Pencil on white can strain young eyes; bold contrast helps him see the whole word as a unit.
- Two dice (optional) — for generating numbers to write as words. Randomness keeps it game-like.
- A small whiteboard or scratch paper — for his writing attempts. Whiteboards feel lower-stakes than a workbook page.
- A picture book with numbers or a birthday card — anything with printed number words in context. If you have Anno's Counting Book, Ten Black Dots, or similar, pull it off the shelf.
You don't need anything fancy. The materials exist to make the words visible and moveable — the thinking happens in conversation.
Best time of day for this lesson
For many five-year-olds, mid-morning after a snack and some movement works well — the brain is fed and the body has settled. If your son is sharper right after waking or after quiet reading time, trust that. Avoid the half-hour before meals or immediately after intense physical play. Gifted children often resist tasks they perceive as "babyish" when they're tired or hungry, so check both before you start.
Activity: "Word Detectives"
This follows the LANGUAGE structure: Hear → Repeat → Use → Wrap-up. Total time: 15–20 minutes. You can compress or expand any phase based on your son's engagement.
Phase 1 — Hear (3–4 minutes)
Lay out numeral cards 1–20 in a row. Place the word cards face down in a stack.
Parent script: "These are number words. In English, some of them are sneaky — they don't look like they sound, and some don't even look like their number. I'm going to show you one, and you tell me if you can read it. If you can't yet, that's fine — we'll figure out why it looks weird."
Turn over the first card: one.
Parent script: "That's one. But look — it starts with o-n-e, and it sounds like 'wun.' English is full of that. You already know it, but it's worth noticing how strange it is."
Work through 1–10 at a brisk pace. He likely knows all of these. Don't linger. Linger is where boredom lives.
Parent script: "Okay, here's where it gets interesting. This is eleven. Say it with me. Eleven. Now look at it — e-l-e-v-e-n. Does it have 'ten' hiding in it? No. Does it have 'one' hiding in it? No. It's a completely different word. Same with twelve — t-w-e-l-v-e. No 'ten,' no 'two.' These two are leftovers from an older way of counting."
Turn over thirteen.
Parent script: "Now look at this one. Thirteen. Can you hear 'three' in it? Can you hear 'ten'? It's 'three-ten,' mushed together over hundreds of years. Four-teen. Fif-teen. Are you starting to hear the pattern?"
Phase 2 — Repeat (3–4 minutes)
Hand him the word cards for 11–20 in a shuffled stack. Ask him to read each aloud and place it beneath its matching numeral.
Parent script: "Read each word out loud, then put it next to the number it belongs to. If one tricks you, hold it aside and we'll look at it together."
If he reads them all correctly, note which ones he spells from memory in Phase 3 — that's the real assessment.
If he stumbles on fifteen (the "f" sound shift from five) or eighteen (only one t), those are natural sticky points. Don't correct immediately. Let him place it, then revisit.
Phase 3 — Use (7–9 minutes)
This is the core activity. Roll two dice, add them, and write the sum as a number word.
Parent script: "Roll. What did you get? Eight. Great — now write eight on the whiteboard. Here's the catch: you have to spell it right. English spelling for number words is genuinely unfair, so if you're not sure, you can look at the word card, then try it from memory."
Let him roll and write several sums. If he's flying, increase the challenge:
- "Roll both dice and multiply. Write that number word."
- "Write eighteen — but tell me first how many ts it should have, and why."
- "Write twelve. Now tell me — does it share any letters with two?"
Key moment to watch for: If he writes twoteen or threeteen or fiveteen, he's applying a rule — and that rule is correct for most of the teens. Celebrate the reasoning, then supply the exception. This is conceptual understanding, not an error.
Phase 4 — Wrap-up (2–3 minutes)
Parent script: "So here's what we found today. One through ten are all their own words — no pattern. Eleven and twelve are also their own words — leftovers from before. Then thirteen through nineteen all follow a pattern: number-plus-ten. And twenty starts a new pattern — twen-ty, like two tens. Next time you see a number written out in a book or on a card, see if you can spot which family it belongs to."

Ask: "Where do you think the word eleven comes from? What about twelve?"
Give him the answer if he's stuck: eleven comes from Old English endleofan — "one left" (after counting to ten). Twelve comes from twelf — "two left." The pattern then breaks at thirteen, which switches to "three and ten."

If your family speaks or has exposure to another language, compare:
