Why this matters

Your son's emotional vocabulary is racing ahead of his body-awareness. That gap is normal in gifted kids — and it's worth tending to deliberately, because intellectualising feelings without feeling them is a pattern that gets more entrenched with age, not less.

The body-emotion link is the foundation for almost everything downstream: noticing "my chest is tight" is what lets a child pause before acting on anger; noticing "butterflies" is what lets them name excitement-vs-fear and choose how to respond. Later this becomes the basis for coping strategies, decision-making under emotion, and even metacognition about his own thinking.

Phase 2 — Explore (7 min)

Pull out the body outline. Name one emotion at a time and ask him to point or colour where he thinks it lives in his body.

Sample dialogue:

"Let's pick 'nervous.' Close your eyes for a second and pretend you're about to walk into a birthday party where you don't know anyone. Scan your body from your head down to your toes — what do you notice? Anything in your tummy? Your hands? Your throat?"

Let him colour that area. Then repeat with angry, excited, and sad — using different colours. Some kids will colour the same spot (often tummy) for everything; that's data, not a wrong answer. Note it for later.

If he says "I don't know" or "nowhere," that's also data — see the kid-response table below.

Phase 3 — Apply (5 min)

Move from general to personal. Recall a real recent moment together.

Sample dialogue:

"Remember this morning when your sister took your Lego piece and you got really mad? Close your eyes and go back to that moment. What was happening in your body right then — before you yelled? Was anything tight, or hot, or fast?"

This is the heart of the lesson. Don't rush. If he can recall one sensation — clenched fists, hot face, fast heart — you've hit the objective. Resist the urge to supply the answer; sit with the silence for a beat.

Phase 4 — Wrap-up (3 min)

Name what you discovered together and plant the habit.

Sample dialogue:

"So your body has its own way of telling you about feelings — tight fists for mad, fluttery tummy for nervous. Next time you feel something big, try this: stop for one second and ask, 'what is my body doing right now?' That's your early-warning system."

Optionally stick the body outline on the fridge or his wall as a reference.
