Activity: "The Science Word Collector"
A 4-phase language lesson. Total time: 15–20 minutes, but follow his lead. If he's electrified by a word, let it breathe.
Phase 1: Hear (3–4 minutes)
Goal: Introduce the life-process words by demonstrating them on your own body and around the room.
Lay out your object collection. Then, with playful energy:
"Scientists have special words for the things all living things do. I'm going to show you seven. Watch."

Goal: Give him the words in his own mouth through playful call-and-response.

Phase 3: Use (6–8 minutes) — the heart of the lesson
Goal: Your son applies the vocabulary to real objects and explains his thinking.
Point to your object collection.
"Now you're the scientist. Pick something and tell me — is it living, dead (was once alive), or never alive? And use a science word to tell me why."

Mushrooms and potatoes are fantastic — they seem not-alive but are. Sponges look like plants but are animals. These puzzles stretch his reasoning beautifully.
Stretch B: "Design an Alien" (5–10 min)
"Imagine an alien that does only five of the seven life processes. Which two did it lose? How does it survive without them?"
This isn't just fun — it forces him to consider each process as essential vs. optional, which is deep biological reasoning. A child who can debate whether an alien could skip excretion is doing real science.
Stretch C: "The Dormant Question" (5 min)
Ask: "Is a seed alive? It doesn't move, it doesn't eat. But if you plant it, it grows. What's going on?"
This introduces dormancy — a living thing paused. Brilliant for a gifted child because it breaks the binary of alive/not-alive.
