Quick gut-check before you start. Total: ~18 minutes — but you might stretch this to 30+ if he runs with the ideas in Apply. That's fine. The time budget is a floor, not a ceiling.


Phase 1 — Introduce (3 min)

Set the globe or map in front of him. Point to the Arctic.

  • "You know this area up here, near the North Pole? We've talked about it before — can you tell me one thing you remember about the Arctic?"

Let him answer. Validate whatever he offers (polar bears, cold, ice, Santa — all fine entry points). Then:

Phase 4 — Wrap-up (2 min)

  • "So tell me in your own words — what's the tundra, and what's the one thing about it that makes it different from where we live?"

  • "Scientists are noticing that the permafrost is starting to thaw in some places. Not everywhere, but some. If you were in charge of figuring out what would happen — what questions would you ask?"

List them together. Possible threads:

  • Where would the meltwater go?
  • What happens to animals that burrow?
  • Would trees be able to grow then?
  • What's been frozen in that ground for thousands of years? (Seeds, animal bones, and — critically — huge amounts of methane and carbon, which is why climate scientists care so much.)

Don't answer everything. Let him sit with the questions. Questions are the product here.

Stretch 2 — Animal design challenge (~5 min)

  • "Okay — you're a nature designer. I give you a new animal, one that doesn't exist yet, and you have to give it three features that would let it survive on the tundra year-round. What three things do you give it, and why?"

Let him invent. The reasoning matters more than biological accuracy. If he says "thick white fur, wide feet, and a special stomach that can eat lichen" — that's exactly musk ox + caribou + Arctic hare, reverse-engineered. Beautiful.

Stretch 3 — Compare tundra to a place he knows (~5 min)

  • "How is the tundra like [your yard / a park / the beach / a forest you've visited]? How is it different?"
